Globes are a great classroom tool for social studies.

The world is a big place, and kindergarten students are usually eager to learn all about it. Experiencing different holiday traditions, foods and music of other countries will fascinate the minds of young children. All kinds of cultural social studies activities are suitable for this age. For regional activities that teach kindergarteners about their own state or country's history, a variety of crafts, games or scavenger hunts will bring lessons to life. Social skills can also be developed through play activities that teach students about their community and family relationships.

  1. Cultural Activities

    • Engage the creative minds of your kindergarten class by creating cultural crafts that teach about different customs and holidays around the world. Sing a song in Spanish, dance an African dance or chow down with Chinese chopsticks. If chopsticks are too tricky for young students to manage, use large tongs to demonstrate the same principle. Hands-on learning activities demonstrate how people from different places do things differently. While playing music from other countries, encourage children to listen for unique instruments or languages that sound different from their own. Activities can also center around holidays. Invite students to share their own family traditions as you discuss special holidays and practices observed by other people and cultures.

    Regional Activities

    • Encourage children to learn more about their country by creating or coloring their own map. A great outdoor activity to teach students about the United States involves simple sidewalk chalk and a large open area of pavement. Draw a large map of the country, state or an outline of the continents of Earth and have the children walk from one point to another. Students can also use toy trains, boats, cars and airplanes to learn about the different types of transportation that take people from one part of the region to another.

    History Activities

    • Field trips provide great social studies activities to learn more about national or state symbols. Even a trip to the playground can provide a great opportunity to explore and learn about the meaning of symbols. Point out all of the flags your see or go on a hunt to find the state flower. While learning about the American flag, students can practice counting the stars and stripes and learn more about their significance.

    Social Activities

    • Imaginative and dramatic play offers great ways to build communication skills while learning about the community. Have children create their own city through centers that allow each student to fill an important role. Allow each child to explore different careers as a firefighter, police officer, teacher or construction worker. Students will learn how people with different jobs and experiences must work together to build a strong community.

    Family Activities

    • Create family tree illustrations to learn about family relationships. Family photo boxes are another great activity to teach young students about connections they share with relatives and other people as they develop a greater sense of self-awareness. Photo boxes can be made by pasting printed pictures of your kindergartner and his family members all over a rectangular or cube-shaped tissue box.
