Car people are those who are passionate about cars and love to work with their hands. If you are dazzled by the glimmer of a shiny vehicle and can't get enough of that new car smell, then a career in auto detailing may be perfect for you. You can get certified to become an auto detailing technician at many auto schools across the country.

  1. Eastern U.S.

    • Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Detail King Auto Detailing Institute LLC offers an auto detailing and reconditioning training program to anyone with the desire to learn. The school accepts recent high school and college graduates, automotive professionals and retirees. The school is licensed by the Pennsylvania Board of Education and is a member of the International Detailing Association.

      Kleen Car Auto Appearance, located in Milford, New Jersey, provides certification courses in auto detailing. In-depth hands-on training is provided in paint technology, products and chemicals, wet sanding, clay, buffing, polishing, vehicle preparation and interior detailing. As of January 2011, the cost per person is $499. Classes are held for two days between the hours of 8:15 am to 4:30 pm.

    Western U.S.

    • Located In San Diego, California, the Smart Detailing University, operated by The Detailing Pros, provides several certification packages from beginners to expert. These include the two-day "Detailer" package overview that covers introductory topics in business, networking, equipment and tools. The "Pros" package is a four-day certification program with courses in detailing, chemicals and business. The most advanced course is the "Master" package, which consists of a five-day certification in all aspects of detailing.

      The Miller Automotive Training Center at the Salt Lake Community College, offers a certificate and an associates program in auto refinishing. The program consist of classes in detailing, sanding and paint application. A certificate is obtained after 36 hours of coursework and an associates degree is granted after two years. The college is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

    Multiple Location Programs

    • The Ding King Training Institute is the nation's leading auto appearance school; with multiple locations across the U.S. As of January 2011, there are three campus locations. Training is available in California, Missouri and Florida. The institute is certified by educational bureaus in all states in which it operates. Some of the training provided includes paintless dent repair, paint repair and and interior repair.

      The Superior Auto Institute, founded in Southern California, operates multiple auto detailing training centers across the U.S. Training center locations include Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore and Miami. Courses cover a range of topics including stain and odor removal, surface scratches, and clear coat damage.

    Online Programs

    • Rightlook Automotive Training and Equipment offers an online curriculum covering a range of topics. These include professional detailing equipment, vehicle washing techniques, detailing chemicals, high speed buffing, polishing and interior and exterior cleaning techniques. The courses are broken up into five modules of two hours each. The training center also offers these same courses at its facility in San Diego, California.
