Kite Art Projects

Kite projects can be done with children of all ages.

Kites have captured the imagination and artistic creativity of kids and adults alike through the ages. The only thing more fun than flying a kite on a sunny day is making a kite art project that captures the feeling of a brightly colored kite soaring across a clear blue sky. Kite projects can be simple or complex, so remember to take into account the age and skill level of the kids you're working with before beginning any projects.

  1. Ceiling Kite

    • This kite project creates a fun room decoration that's appropriate for kids of all ages. Create the body of the kite by hot gluing two dowel rods together in the shape of a cross, then gluing a kite-shaped piece of construction paper to the dowels. Make the tail of the kite by cutting small pieces of crepe paper streamer and twisting them in the center, then tying them along a length of fishing line. Attach the tail to the bottom of the kite body and tack the finished project in the corner of your child's room.

    Kite Acrostic

    • This is a good project for middle school aged children learning about the acrostic poetry form. Have students cut a kite out of construction paper, then compose an acrostic that uses the letters of the word "kite" to start each line of the poem. Write each line of the poem on a separate rectangular piece of paper, and glue the papers along a piece of string. Finally, attach the poem "tail" to the bottom of the construction paper kite.

    Shape Kite

    • Teach younger children about shapes by having them use the shapes they're familiar with in a kite art project. Before beginning the project, talk to the children about shapes they see around them and review the names of the shapes. Then, distribute sheets of paper pre-cut into a kite shape, and have children fill in the kites with as many shapes as they can fit. Distribute markers and crayons and have children color in their finished projects.

    Grocery Bag Kite

    • This is a fun and easy design for a kite that even young children can make and fly. Have children decorate paper grocery bags with markers, crayons and paint. Then, attach two lengths of yarn to either side of the grocery bag. If the grocery bag has handles, you can simply tie the yarn on to them. When children hold the string and run with the grocery bag behind them, it will lift off into the air and fly.
