Pique the interest of your third graders with snowman projects.

With cold weather comes snow, and with snow comes snowmen. When having a lesson plan about winter months with your third graders, be sure to include several snowman projects. Whether it's a snowman made of craft sticks or a polystyrene snowman, children can use their imagination to create the perfect snowman projects whether they live in an area that receives annual snow or not.

  1. Craft Stick Snowman

    • Your third graders can make a craft stick snowman using a few supplies from your local craft store. Tell your pupils to paint six craft sticks, three-fourths white paint and the rest with black paint. The white is the snowman's face and the black is his hat. Have them paint one craft stick completely in black paint. They are going to lay all the black and white sticks beside each other (black end toward the top) and put a line of glue where the black and white paint comes together. Tell them to place the solid black stick across the line of glue. Have them glue the googly eyes to the white part of the sticks to start the face. They can cut a piece of triangle from orange craft foam (nose) and a mouth from black craft foam and glue it on the write craft sticks to finish the snowman's face. Attach a piece of black ribbon to the snowman so they can hang it up.

    Painted Snowmen

    • Give each of your pupils a piece of black construction paper and white paint. The children can use their fingers to paint a snowman or snowmen on the black paper. Show the children how to rub their fingers in a circular motion to make the round circles for each layer of the snowman. After the paint dries, the children can use markers to decorate their snowman.

    Snowman Thermometer

    • Help your children make a snowman thermometer by painting a large craft stick with white paper. Give each child a small piece of fabric to tie around the top of the craft stick, creating a scarf for the snowman and leaving enough room on top to make his face. Help the children use small tip markers to draw the snowman's face on the stick above the scarf. The pupils can take a red glitter pen to draw the ball of mercury half way up the stick. Then they can take a black marker pen to write numbers up the sides of the stick to resemble a thermometer.

    Polystyrene Foam

    • Purchase several different sizes of polystyrene foam balls and some small wood dowels. Each student can pick out three balls to create his snowman. Help each pupil stick the three foam balls on a wood dowel. Put out fabric, markers, googly eyes, craft foam and pipe cleaners for the children to use to decorate their snowmen.
