Types of Joint Degrees

Types of Joint Degrees thumbnail
Many students who want to go into health care as a career are opting for joint degrees.

Joint degrees are obtained by individuals who want to specialize in two or more areas. Joint degrees are becoming available in more universities and colleges because they are recognizing the need for students to have multiple areas of expertise. There is an endless amount of joint degrees to choose from, but they may require the permission of a university dean. Having a joint degree can increase your chances of reaching your professional dreams, especially in a job market that has become so competitive.

  1. Health

    • Joint degrees in the health industry are becoming popular because students see much more opportunity in the field. For example, students studying nursing have the option in many schools to work toward a joint degree, such as combining public health and education. Students are able to combine their nursing degrees with another degree to widen their career opportunities. Many who pursue joint degrees in nursing and other areas may go on to work in health administration or work for health departments on a state or federal level, or they may choose to teach about health.

    Business

    • It is not uncommon for business students to work toward joint degrees. Students learn the basics of business, marketing, developing a product and managing a business, but they also want to combine their business knowledge with their passion. A joint degree allows them to do this. Students may take courses in engineering, health care, education, accounting or other subjects that may help them focus on a specialty when they enter the job market.

    Law

    • Law students commonly work toward joint degrees to give them more of a background and expertise in the area of law where they want to work. Lawyers supplement their law studies with such subjects as psychology or business. Lawyers who want to work in certain industries, such as accounting, insurance, engineering or law enforcement, will obtain joint degrees in subjects that contain those components.

    Education

    • An education joint degree is useful for those who want to combine their skills and training as educators with training in specific topics and subjects. Education degrees can be combined with a fine arts degree or sociology or anthropology degrees for those who want to work in art galleries or museums. Educators can take on a joint degree in a language, science or other subject if they want to become an English teacher or science teacher. In fact, most education degrees will incorporate a joint degree into their program to assist students in long-term career goals.
