Level 3 Communications Inc. is a public company whose stock trades on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange under the symbol LVLT. The company, headquartered in Broomfield, CO., provides a range of communications services in North America and Europe. It is a facilities-based provider that owns and leases a network of property and equipment to provide its services.

  1. History

    • The company started in 1985 as Kiewit Diversified Group Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Peter Kiewit Sons' Inc., but changed its name to Level 3 Communications Inc. in 1998. It subsequently grew by constructing its own assets and acquiring other companies. In 2003, it acquired Genuity, and between 2005 and 2007 it acquired WilTel, Progress Telecom, ICG, TelCove, Looking Glass Networks, Broadwing, Servecast and SAVVIS' content delivery network services business.

    Services

    • Through its network of communications infrastructure and facilities, Level 3 offers a wide range of services. It provides large-scale network and Internet services to wholesale and enterprise customers, and co-location services with data centers for customers to place their network and content storage equipment. It also offers media services, such as audio and video feeds, and content delivery network services which improve the performance of delivering digital content over the Internet.

    Competition

    • Level 3 operates in a highly competitive industry. The key competitors for some of its service offerings include AT&T, Verizon, Global Crossing, Qwest, Akamai Technologies and Limelight Networks. As technology continues to advance, Level 3 sees the potential for more supply and lower costs for competing services. This may enable more competition from new entrants to the communications industry that are able to start with new technology, rather than working with aging equipment.

    More Information

    • As a public company, Level 3 is required to file quarterly and annual financial reports and other financial information with the Securities and Exchange Commission. These are available for free from the SEC's online EDGAR Database and are also available on Level 3's Investor Relations web page.
