Math Projects for Second Grade with a Friends Theme
Friendship is a theme that students often practice everyday both during and outside of school. Incorporate friendship into your math activities by allowing second grade students to point out the value of friendship, graph the preferences of friends and spell friends' names with manipulatives while learning and solidifying mathematical concepts.

Graph the Class
-
Second graders will participate in the themed unit by graphing statistics taken from their classmates. Bar graphs and pictographs are among the appropriate types of charts for a second grade achievement level. The students may chart items such as number of male and female students in the class, the number and types of pets our classmates have and their favorite subject areas. Getting to know each other will help the students form friendships.
Friendship Circle Shapes
-
During the friendship circle activity, students and the teacher will sit in a circle, one of whom will be holding a ball of colored yarn. The person with the yarn will hold the free end and toss the yarn ball lightly to another friend while stating what makes the yarn ball recipient a good friend. Holding the yarn string, each student will repeat the action until all friends have had a turn. A spiderweb-type shape will be formed in the center of the circle. Each student will then try to find geometric shapes within the yarn travels, still holding the section of yarn from his turn. Count the named shapes, including triangles, squares, trapezoids and pentagons, to see how many the class can find together during the friendship-themed activity.

Tangram Friend Names
-
Group students into twos and issue each pair of friends a set of tangrams. Challenge the students to spell the other friend's name using the tangram shapes. Each student will have a turn to use the polygons and, as a themed extension to the activity, instruct the pair to spell the word "friendship."
Friend Measurement
-
The friend measurement activity gives second graders an opportunity to measure lengths in feet or inches. With a large piece of mural or butcher paper, two friends will trace each other's outline by laying on the paper and moving a pencil around the outside of the other friend's body. When finished, the pair will measure the body outlines with a ruler or tape measure finding the exact number of feet and inches tall the friends are.
