Squirrel feeders can be an important source of nutrition for squirrels in residential areas where natural foods are in short supply. Squirrel feeders can range from a basic two-board design to decorated shelters. The best foods for squirrels include peanuts, pine nuts, sunflower seeds, walnuts, hazelnuts, carrots and apples. For extra calcium, boiled bones or cuttlefish can be provided as well.

  1. Basic Feeders

    • A basic design for a wood squirrel feeder can be as simple as two pieces of wood, such as old fence boards or pieces of scrap lumber. A vertical board is nailed or wired to a tree, with a horizontal board nailed or screwed it, wide enough for the squirrel to sit on. A bowl of nuts or peanuts is then mounted on the platform, or a long nail is hammered through the board for a cob of corn to be mounted.

    Decorative Feeders

    • Many squirrel feeders use a basic design for the structure, with decorative designs added to the feeder to brighten the backyard. The wood can be cut into the shape of a squirrel, tree, farmer, or silhouette using a hand saw or jigsaw. Alternatively, the basic feeder can be carved using a chisel or simply painted using weather-resistant paint.

    Enclosed Feeders

    • Enclosed feeders protect food from the elements and give the squirrels a place to sit while they eat. Many of these feeders resemble bird houses or are made from modified bird house designs. An enclosed feeder can be as basic as a roof and three walls mounted on a board or done in elaborate designs with peaked roofs, doors and windows. Openings in the feeder should be at least 2 inches in diameter to allow easy access for the squirrels. An enclosed feeder can be filled with nuts, peanuts or other treats.

    Peanut Butter Jar

    • Similar to an enclosed design, a squirrel feeder can also be made using an empty gallon glass jar mounted on a wooden base. Not only does this provide shelter for the food and the squirrel, the glass also becomes a picture window into the life of a squirrel while it eats. The jar must be large enough for the squirrel to sit inside, with an ample opening for them to climb inside and to make their getaways.
