Dinosaur projects help explain the concept of extinction to students.

Dinosaurs are a fascinating topic for students young and old. So many concepts such as archaeology, dinosaur structure, environment, extinction, feeding habits and weather can be explored using dinosaur projects. Creating projects is simple and can use everyday classroom materials like play dough, glue, crayons, paper and small boxes. The project possibilities are endless.

  1. Dinosaur Diorama

    • Dioramas are excellent school projects. Students create a dinosaur environment within a shoebox. The inside of the box is painted or colored to look like the landscape when dinosaurs lived. Dinosaurs can be made of paper or clay and placed inside. Trees can be made out of paper and glued down.

    Papier Mache Dinosaur Bone

    • Papier mache is a popular craft at schools. Dinosaur bones can easily be created using a tube from a roll of paper towels and newspaper crumpled in a ball and taped to each end of the tube. Then, apply the papier mache mixture. When the bone has three layers on it, students can paint the bone a creamy color to make it look real.

    Dinosaur Dig

    • Dinosaur digs are always fun for younger children. The dig is created by filling a table with sand and hiding dog bones or small plastic dinosaurs in the sand. Give students small paint brushes to gently move the sand away from what they discover is buried. Teaching the archaeology concept can be done with this project.

    Dinosaur Enviroment

    • Create a dinosaur environment using the bottom of a cardboard box painted black with green for grass. Create a lake with blue gel glue. Create dinosaurs out of clay. Add a small juice can in the middle and cover it with clay or play dough to create an inactive volcano. Put plastic dinosaurs in the box to finish the environment. The volcano can be made active by mixing vinegar and baking soda in the can.
