  1. McPike Mansion

    • McPike Mansion is reputed to be one of the most haunted houses in the United States, according to the Chicago Paranormal Research Institute. This spooky residence was built in 1869 for Henry Guest McPike. It has 16 rooms and a wine cellar. The McPike family owned the house until 1925 (or 1936, most records are unclear), then it was purchased by Paul A. Laichinger who lived there until 1945 until his death from smoking related illness. Witnesses has stated that they have seen and smelt cigarette smoke in the house. Property owners have sighted the ghost of Laichinger and a servant called Sarah. After 1945, the property was abandoned and though buyers have bought the property, deals have fallen through and the house has been vandalized and is in a state of disrepair. In the wine cellar, there has been documented evidence of mist that moves freely and no other explanation has been found for the appearance of the mist and most of the strange occurrences such as footsteps, noises and sightings. New owners at the present time, January 2011, are renovating the property and visits are not permitted. However, at Halloween a bonfire party is scheduled outside the mansion.

    Glessner House

    • Glessner House is the oldest building in the city. It was built in 1886 for John Glessner. Glessner House is now a museum and offers tours of the building and events. Paranormal phenomenon that have occurred here include a feeling of cold, invisible presences moving though the house and an apparition of someone dressed in white in the bedroom and on the staircase. Glessner House is open all year round except for major holidays. Opening times are Wednesday through to Sunday 1.00 to 3.00 p.m., as of January 2011. Admission is free on Wednesday and admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Congress Plaza Hotel

    • The Congress Plaza Hotel is alleged to be the most haunted place in Chicago. It has been the site of many unexplainable phenomena such as cold spots, people feeling they are being watched, doors opening and closing and TVs turning themselves on and off in the night. Voices have been heard when no one is around. Al Capone reportedly owned this building and used as his headquarters. The murder of a man named Peg-Leg Johnny also allegedly occurred here and guests have sighted a ghost with a peg leg. Other paranormal activity includes sightings of ghostly figures, poltergeist activity and noises coming from the ballroom.

    Peyton's Place, Warsaw

    • In this house it is reported that a man killed his entire family with a pitch fork. Experiences that people have had upon visiting the property include seeing a man standing at the family burial plot at the back of the property and voices shouting, telling them to leave the property. There has also been reports of a black Ford 1960s Mustang chasing visitors from the house that disappears as soon as you leave the area.
