Business Colleges in Central Illinois
Central Illinois may not be home to the state's largest urban environment -- Chicago -- but it does contain a number of medium-sized cities that host business schools. Among the cities in central Illinois that lay claim to business schools are Champaign, Springfield, East Peoria, Normal and Decatur. The business colleges in the area are diverse in their focuses; some stress practical, career-oriented training while others emphasize theory and research. These schools include two branches of the University of Illinois.

There are five prominent business schools in central Illinois. State schools host three of these colleges and private institutions of higher learning host two. The state business schools in the area are University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana College of Business, University of Illinois Springfield College of Business and Management and the College of Business at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Millikin University of Decatur, Illinois is home to the Tabor School of Business and Illinois Central College of East Peoria boasts the Department of Business and Information Systems. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana the 42nd best business school in the United States.

Undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at the business schools of central Illinois. The University of Illinois Springfield awards undergraduate degrees in four concentrations and allows students to minor in three of those four fields of study. The school also awards three online undergraduate degrees and three master degrees. The University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana awards an MBA, five specialty master degrees and a doctoral degree. MBA and undergraduate degrees are available from Tabor School of Business. Illinois Central College awards certificates of Business and runs transfer programs, or those designed to give students a core of credits in a subject that may be transferred to a degree-awarding institution.

The four undergraduate degree subjects available at the University of Illinois, Springfield are accounting, general business, economics, and management information systems. Illinois State University has a special program in finance, insurance and law.

Illinois Central College offers a program called Career Clusters that allows students to take courses in a number of related fields to expand their base of knowledge and skills and thereby engorge the field of potential career opportunities. The Business Career Cluster offers training in administration, business information systems, general management, HR management and operations management.
