Fun Goalkeeping Games

A goalkeeper needs to prevent the ball from passing him.

Goalkeeping games are a subgenre of soccer games that allow you to play as the goalkeeper. It is your job to prevent your opponents from getting the ball into your team's net and scoring a goal. Typically, your player is confined to the goal scoring area and you have to maneuver him around to block any balls that are kicked at the net. If the ball manages to get past your player, the opposing team will score. This simple premise makes for games that are easy to pick up and play, which is why this type of game can be found on many gaming systems.

  1. Flash Games

    • Fun goalkeeping games are a popular genre for Flash games and there are various titles available for free on the Internet. "Goalkeeper Challenge" places the view behind your player and you have to move him around by moving your mouse left and right. Opposing team players are constantly kicking the ball at the net and it takes quick reflexes to position your player in the right spot to block it. You can only move left or right which makes this game somewhat easier than other titles. For more of a challenge you can try "Ragdoll Goalkeeper," where the camera is in front of your player and you have to click and drag him in the path of incoming balls. Due to the "ragdoll" nature of your player, which causes him to jump and fall in a realistic manner, this is a more humorous and polished-looking title.

    Mobile Games

    • Fun goalkeeping games are a good choice for mobile phone owners as the game can be quickly played for a few minutes at a time. Titles like "Goalkeeper" test your reflexes by launching soccer balls at your goal area; you have to block all of the balls by moving your player around. "Soccer Goalie" follows a similar concept as you have to block all the goals by throwing your player in the path of the ball. Some games can only be used on certain types of phones; check the packaging when you buy the game.

    Console Games

    • Soccer games on consoles have traditionally only focused on either placing you in the shoes of the manager as you try to build up a good team, or giving you control of the whole team as you pass the ball around on your way to scoring a goal. Titles like "Fifa 11" have introduced a new feature where you can "be the goalkeeper" and focus only on this player while preventing any goals. The game is available for all major consoles like the Xbox360 and PS3.

    Computer Games

    • Computer games in the soccer genre have also traditionally been split between managerial simulators or arcade type titles. There are, however, commercial goalkeeping titles available like "The Goalkeeper." You can customize your goalkeeper, which gives it a bit more depth than typical goalkeeping games. You can also choose from different leagues and train your character between matches to improve his skills. The game is available for MAC and PC.
