Professionals and home cooks can benefit from learning to make pastries.

Cooking schools are available in many colleges around the country. For culinary students learning about pastries, however, there are more limitations because pastries are a specialized food. Culinary art schools might not have a rigorous pastry program or baking program available. Fortunately, there are schools that are dedicated not only to excellent cooking, but also pastries and baking.

  1. Tante Marie's Cooking School

    • Tante Marie's is a California school option that offers a wide range of courses for people seeking professional degrees and anyone else interested in learning how to cook. The pastry program at the school is part-time, which makes it an ideal choice for anyone who has a busy schedule and limited time to learn. The course is six months long, and qualifying students are offered externships at local bakeries.

    Culinard

    • The Culinard is a culinary school that offers degrees in both culinary arts and pastry arts. The pastry arts program is 36 weeks long and teaches everything from baking pastries to running a pastry business, hospitality and services related to culinary businesses and sanitation and safety at the workplace. The Culinard has four locations: Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama; Jacksonville, Florida; and Richmond, Virginia.

    Le Cordon Bleu

    • Le Cordon Bleu started as a culinary arts school in France in 1896. It started a partnership with the United States and has several locations within the U.S. There are 16 campuses in the United States for students interested in an education from Le Cordon Bleu. Students who graduate from Le Cordon Bleu are among the best culinary arts students and patisseries. The students in the patisseries program are exposed to baking and pastries from around the world, including studies of classic desserts and newly invented baking options.

    The French Pastry School

    • The French Pastry School offers a 24-week program in baking, pastries and confectionaries for students interested in the program. The program teaches everything from sanitation and safety to the creation of breads, pastries and ice cream. Completion of the course is worth 24 college credits. The program has two sessions available, mornings from 6:45 to 12:45 or evenings from 1:15 to 7:15. The school is in Chicago.
