If you are getting bug bites and find bugs in your bed that you can't identify, examine them carefully. If they hop, they're fleas. If they crawl, it's most likely bedbugs, seed ticks or clover mites. Fleas, ticks, and mites are easy to get rid of, but bedbugs can be a real problem.
Adult bedbugs are about the size of an apple seed, but immature bedbugs are much smaller. During the day, bedbugs hide in crevices and cracks near the spot where their host sleeps. They can live in the box springs, cracks in the mattress frame, in the headboard and in other places in the room. At night, they emerge and suck blood, leaving itchy bites. Out of all the insects it could be, bedbugs are the ones you want the least. They are extremely difficult to kill, and hiring a professional exterminator is recommended.
Fleas are another blood-sucking insect. They are usually carried into the house from the outside by pets. Fleas are highly mobile thanks to their extreme jumping power. They will leap onto any warm-blooded animal that draws near. If the tiny bugs jump, it's most likely fleas. Remove the bedding and wash it in hot, soapy water. Treat pets with flea control products, vacuum carpets and rugs, and spray the area with insecticide. This is one pest you will not get rid of unless you treat the entire area.
Seed ticks are immature tick nymphs. They live in wooded or grassy areas, and climb onto a high point such as a blade of grass or twig. When a host passes by, they wave their legs and latch on. Some seed ticks will swarm up their host's legs en mass. Once they have fed, they fall off the host and may stay in the bed. Again, wash your bedding in hot, soapy water and treat the area with insecticide.
Clover mites come indoors in the fall, looking for a place to spend the winter. They can invade in massive numbers, and can appear in beds or in clothes. They don't bite or spread diseases, but they can be irritating for people with sensitive skin. Wash the bedding in hot, soapy water, and vacuum the area with the proper attachments to remove the mites.
