What Are the Meanings of the Grades of Duct Tape?

Duct tape is a frequently purchased product in the do-it-yourself area. It can be used in many different applications and is convenient to have around the house for a quick fix. While many people have this item in their homes, they may not realize that duct tape has three different grades available on the market. These grades are premium, professional and industrial.

Premium Grade Duct Tape

  • Premium duct tape is the highest quality that can be purchased today. It has an high-tack adhesive and can be used for permanent or temporary repairs. The normal adhesion strength for this grade is about 55 ounces per inch. This tape is also the thickest, with a varying range depending on the brand. Complete with a UV Resistant coating, as well as waterproofed materials, it can be used inside as well as outdoors.

Professional Grade Duct Tape

  • Professional grade duct tape is a multi-purpose tool. It has the second highest adhesion strength, measuring in at 50 ounces per inch. The professional grade has a thickness better than industrial, but lower than that found in a premium tape. The exact thickness can vary depending on the specific brand. It can be found readily at home improvement stores. Professional grade duct tape can be used for many general construction jobs with ease and can also be used for basic home repairs, crafting projects, bundling and packaging.

Industrial Grade Duct Tape

  • Industrial grade is the most basic of the three tapes and can be used on more basic and simple projects. It has the adhesive strength of 49 ounces per inch and is the thinnest duct tape. Specific brands will specify exact thickness sizes. The tape can be used for many basic home repair jobs that require a temporary fix. Although not the strongest of the tapes available, industrial strength tape can mend or patch objects and is great to have on hand for crafting and general repair projects.

Choosing The Perfect Duct Tape

  • While the best option may seem to be to simply choose the best quality tape for all jobs, this may not be the best solution. Keep in mind whether the repair is only temporary, as the stronger the tape, the harder it is to remove. Also remember that industrial strength tape is normally sufficient in repairing day-to-day items and should suffice in a pinch.
