Make a list of things to do before the clock ticks down to graduation day.

The end of high school is exciting and scary at the same time. Most students have lists of things to do before graduation, including college-related lists, high school goal lists, academic lists and personal lists. Creating lists and dreams for the future is an important part of high school. After the creation comes the finishing, which is the most fun.

  1. Apply to College

    • Take the ACT or SAT or both depending on the college or university you want to attend. Research several different colleges your junior year in high school. Look at the school Web pages, order admission materials and visit the schools. Apply to the top three or four on your list. Research and complete financial aid applications to help pay for college.

    Learn to be More Independent

    • Learn how to take care of yourself away from home and Mom and Dad. Learn how to do laundry and iron your clothes. Learn a few basic cooking skills in case you live in a dorm or apartment with a kitchen. Set up a checking and savings account and get a credit card. Have your parents explain how to manage your money without going into debt.

Find a Role Model or Mentor

    • Connect with an adult you trust and look up to and ask her to mentor you as you complete high school and begin college. This person could be a high school teacher, counselor, minister or priest, or friend of the family.

    Enjoy High School

    • Attend high school dances and parties. Participate in extracurricular activities and clubs. Make new friends. Order your yearbook and class ring. Attend your senior prom. Overcome a fear, such as public speaking. Try something new, be it a class or activity.
