Matric Dance Style Tips
A matric dance is South Africa's equivalent to prom. It's a formal dance for young people, and comes with all of the usual fashion questions and concerns that have to be taken into consideration. With some forethought you can create a style that makes you stand out among the crowd. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Enhance Your Good Features
-
When choosing your style for a matric dance, look at your body and what you're working with. Choose which features you want to highlight and which features you want to hide. For instance, if you're a girl with good legs, then you want to wear a dress that has a skirt to emphasize and reveal that. If you're a guy who has good shoulders, then wear a vest to emphasize the breadth with a color contrast.
Coordinate With Your Date
-
You could take two people who both look fabulous on their own, but when you pair them together the clashing styles may cancel each other out. Get together with your date and find out what styles work for you as a couple. For instance, a girl with a white dress that has black accents would work well with a guy in a white tuxedo with a black vest and tie. Or you could reverse the colors on one member to create a black and white contrast. Make sure that you've prepared your looks in advance so that you like your styles.

Accessories
-
Accessories are an important styling tool, but they should be used to emphasize the overall look. For instance, a girl with a deep red dress could benefit from a rose in her hair to keep the color scheme going. A guy with silvered buttons on his jacket might do well with a silver pocket watch and tie pin to add a touch of old world class. Don't overdo the accessories. If you have three little touches that accentuate the overall look, then you should be just fine.
Check the Rules
-
When a matric dance is being hosted by a school, it pays to read the entry rules to make sure that you won't have any problems with the fashion police. Skirt length may be an issue, as well as how low a girl's top can plunge. For guys, whether or not tattoos can show or how formal you have to be may also be an issue. Sure, putting together a dress and tux combination in patched leather might look cool and rebellious; but if you can't get into the event, then it puts a hitch in your evening plans.
