The SMART Scholarship provides full tuition for science majors.

Students seeking full scholarships often face rigid guidelines. Programs can demand high academic achievement, require service after graduation or limit eligibility to minority students or individuals with a particular background. Although certain full scholarship programs allow students to pursue any course of study, others can limit awards to scholars enrolled in specified educational programs. Scholarship awards vary and can offer payment of all school fees, housing and cash awards.

  1. Gates Millennium Scholars Program

    • The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation established the Gates Millennium Scholars Program in 1999. Gates Millennium Scholars can receive full educational funding, which they can use at colleges and universities throughout the U.S. The program offers funding to minority undergraduate students, including African Americans, Asian Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Hispanics. Students must be U.S. citizens or legal residents and have a grade point average of at least 3.3. Gates Millennium Scholars must also demonstrate a history of community service and extracurricular activities. Scholars who continue their studies in graduate school may qualify for additional funding. Candidates can apply at the Gates Millennium Scholars website.

    SMART Scholarship

    • Graduate and undergraduate students studying mathematics, science, engineering or technology can apply for the Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation Scholarship, also referred to as the SMART Scholarship. Eligible courses of study include naval architecture, operations research, civil engineering, mathematics and physics. The United States Department of Defense (DOD) offers the award, which pays all tuition and school fees and pays a personal cash award between $25,000 and $41,000, as of January, 2011. To qualify, students must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. The program requires recipients to attend summer internships and agree to accept employment at a DOD facility after graduation. Eligible students can apply online at the SMART Scholarship website.

    Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship

    • Golf caddies can apply for the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, sponsored by the Evans Scholars Foundation and Western Golf Association. The program provides housing and full tuition for a maximum of four years. Candidates must receive a nomination from their golf club. Other requirements include two years of caddie experience, a minimum "B" average and a financial need for assistance. Recipients typically attend universities where the program operates Evans Scholars housing, including the University of Colorado, University of Illinois, Miami University and Purdue University. Caddies can download an application from the Western Golf Association website.

    Hertz Foundation

    • Graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in physical science or engineering can apply for the Graduate Fellowship Award, funded by the Hertz Foundation. The merit-based fellowship pays all tuition and fees for up to five years and offers a personal cash award of up to $36,000, as of January, 2011. Candidates must enroll in a graduate program offered by one of the dozens of schools approved by the Hertz Foundations, including Columbia University, Arizona State University, the University of Rochester, Vanderbilt University and the University of California Berkeley. Applicants must hold U.S. citizenship and demonstrate excellent technical knowledge and intelligence. Graduate students can apply for the fellowship online at the Hertz Foundation website.
