The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), considered by many as the world's foremost authority on precious gems, accepts students from all over the world. The school grants the Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma, which is the industry's highest professional credential, to those who are able to complete the course at one of its campuses located in California, New York and various other parts of the world. At GIA, it can take as little as 6 months to learn the skills and get the recognition of a being a fully qualified professional, and acquire a Graduate Gemologist Diploma.
Certified Gemologist Degree from the American Gem Society
The American Gem Society (AGS) was founded in 1934 with the objective of making it easier and safer to buy jewelry, and it is dedicated to promoting the ethical representation of all jewelry products. A gemologist who is granted the title of Certified Gemologist (CG) by the American Gem Society is one who has completed advanced studies in diamonds and colored gemstones. A Certified Gemologist demonstrates mastery of diamond, gemstone and precious metal testing procedures. A gemologist who earns a degree from AGS must appear for a re-test each year to maintain his certification as a Certified Gemologist.

The Montreal School of Gemology is well-known gem training institution that is based in Montreal, Canada. The school provides provides full courses to students preparing to write exams for the Canadian Gemological Association (CGA), the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The school issues a gemology diploma recognized by the gem and jewelry industries upon completion of its gemology program.

The Gemmological Association of Great Britain provides four internationally recognized gem qualifications awarded after an examination: the Foundation Certificate in Gemmology, the Diploma in Gemmology, the Diamond Practical Certificate and the Gem Diamond Diploma. The Foundation Certificate and the world-renowned Diploma in Gemmology, are of the highest gemological education standard provided by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, and are officially accredited in the UK. The Diploma in Gemmology is awarded on the basis of course work and the final exams, and it takes a minimum of six months to complete the course.
