Signs of Overheat on Roof Plywood
An overheated roof will damage the plywood and other parts of the roof. Lack of roof ventilation is the number one cause of a roof overheating. Adequate ventilation will remove moisture and heat from the attic. With adequate ventilation, the temperature outside the roof and in the attic will be close to each other. Luckily there are many signs that an overheated roof will give, so you can fix the issue early before serious damages occurs. Does this Spark an idea?

Leaking Roof
-
The first signs your roof will give you that it does not have adequate ventilation and is overheating will be a roof leak. The heat on the roof will cause the roofing paper to move around the edges, exposing a possible path for water to enter the roof. Roof leaking is usually attributed to other things, so it is important that you look for other signs to confirm the roof is leaking because of overheating.
Roof Paper Damage
-
The roof paper will start to lift with time and crack after being exposed to an overheated roof plywood. The plywood will become so hot that the heat will begin burning the roofing paper. The most common signs of the damage from the overheated roof will be on the middle of the roof, as this is the area that tends to be the hottest when an attic is not adequately ventilated.

Plywood Damage
-
The heat of the roof on the plywood will cause the plywood to warp and become soft. The easiest way to identify this is to walk carefully on the roof and see if the roof plywood has become soft and warped. From inside the attic you can see other signs of plywood damage. Look at the plywood and look for the plywood falling apart. Pieces of the plywood will begin to fall as the glue that holds the plywood together beings to fail.
Increased Cooling Costs
-
The roof and the attic will become so hot due to the heat that the heat will travel into the rest of the house. With increased heat from the attic, your cooling bills will increase. Your air conditioner will have to work harder to bring the house to a comfortable temperature. Though an increase in cooling bills is not always a sign of an overheating roof, it can be if it's combined with any of the other signs.

I see many roofing systems damaged by inadequate ventilation. Replacing all the plywood on a roof system will add around 65% to the cost of your roof replacement. and can easily be prevented by adding ventilation.
