Ideas to Manage Household Bills
Dealing with bills is a task that almost no one looks forward to, but it's undeniably necessary. If you find juggling your bills to be excessively difficult, consider changing the way in which you approach tending to them. By modifying your system, you might be able to make your monthly bill-paying a bit easier to stomach and get into a better financial situation.

Prioritization
-
While it's vital that you pay all of your bills in a timely fashion, when it comes to paying extra each month, prioritization is often necessary. If you're financially able to pay more than the minimum, decide which accounts you'll dedicate these extra funds to by prioritizing your bills. To prioritize most effectively, determine the interest rate on each account and pay down those with the highest interest rates first --- these accounts end up costing you the most if you wait to pay them down.
Bill Planner
-
If you chronically miss your bill due dates, make that a thing of the past by creating a bill planner. Purchase a standard planner and dedicate it solely to tracking your bills. Each time you receive a new bill, open it and write the due date in the planner, then move back in your planner three days before the due date and write a note to yourself to send the bill out. Place your bills in a folder and reference the planner regularly, ensuring that you remain aware of when each of your bills are due and pay them accordingly.

Budgeting Option
-
Certain bills, like those for natural gas, fluctuate wildly depending upon the season. If the cold weather constantly causes your gas bill to inflate, consider opting for the budgeting option. Companies often allow you to use a budgeting option if you wish. If you select the budgeting option, the company calculates the average monthly gas use and charges you this figure. While this does mean that you'll likely pay more in the summer, it also means that your winter gas bills won't put you in the poorhouse.
The Envelope System
-
People who find balancing their money to be difficult often find success with the envelope system. To use the envelope system, gather standard business-size envelopes and label each with a different expense that you have to tend to each month. For example, one envelope may say "electric," while another says "food." At the beginning of the month, take out cash and divide this cash among your envelopes as necessary. If you complete this process faithfully and avoid the temptation to dip into envelopes, you can likely ensure that you spend your money effectively and increase your chances of meeting your monthly bills.
