Safety engineering is a broad discipline of study that includes health, safety, and environmental and homeland security. Bachelor's and master's degree programs are offered in a variety of fields within safety engineering. Safety engineers work in mission-critical fields such as oil exploration, infrastructure building, fire and police departments and hospitals.

Advanced Safety Engineering Management

Advanced safety and engineering management is a degree concentration offered by some universities under the master's of engineering degree. The program teaches students to identify and correct safety and health concerns at the design stage of a given project. Safety engineers protect people, planet and profits by building safety features into the initial design. Students study hazard analysis and waste elimination, engineering ethics and acceptable risk, public policy issues and crisis leadership.
Fire Safety Engineering Technology

Bachelor's and master's degrees can be sought in fire safety engineering technology. People with degrees in this field work as fire chiefs, arson investigators and fire safety consultants to architects. Courses include building construction for fire protection, fire behavior and combustion, fire protection law and hazardous materials.

A degree in health, safety and environment, or HSE, is in demand at oil exploration companies. Master's and bachelor's degrees are available in HSE. A master's in HSE management is also available for students who wish to pursue management positions. Courses include environmental health and epidemiology, occupational health and safety laws and regulations, environmental remediation, vulnerability and threat assessment.
Homeland Security and Safety Engineering

A master's of science is available in homeland security and safety engineering. This program is an interdisciplinary course that encompasses the complex issues associated with safety and security. Courses include chemical plant process safety, security planning and design, explosives and planning for terrorism. Students should have taken at least one course in chemistry prior to registering for this degree.
