For example, there are many suitable alternatives to mashed potatoes. It just takes getting familiar with a few vegetables you might otherwise overlook in the produce isle.
Steamed cauliflower can be pureed in a food processor with ingredients like cream, butter or just milk to create a smooth dish that looks remarkably like mashed potatoes and taste comparable.

Celery root, also known as celeriac, makes a good alternative when cooked in milk and mixed with an ample amount of butter. It has a delicate celery flavor and is hard to discern from a potato in a recipe. The downside is it takes more time to cut and clean than a potato.
