Many people tend to have a misconception about the benefits of an out of school suspension. It appears the idea of not having to go to school sounds great to any student who receives an out of school suspension. However, this has been an effective technique for many years and continues to work today.

The Shame Factor

A student who receives an out of school suspension has to face the fact that his peers will know he did something bad enough to get kicked out of school for a couple days. Rather than a simple warning or trip to the principal's office, a suspension makes the student feel that his or her acts were so repulsive that the school doesn't even want him or her on the premises.
Make Up Work

When a student misses school, he or she is forced to make up the work missed during the suspension. This means twice the homework for the week following the suspension. Knowing this deters many students from acting out in a way that could result in out of school suspension. After all, hardly any student ever wants additional homework.

Sufficient Time to Think

Being out of school for several days gives a student several days to think about his or her actions and the consequences that it brought about. The suspension gives them time to realize what they did was so bad that they aren't allowed to be back for several days, and therefore persuades them not to act out in such a way in the future.
Sends a Message to Other Students

Other students see the teacher make an example of someone by expelling them from school for a couple of days. After watching something like that happen, other students may be motivated to improve their behavior to avoid the punishment the suspended student received.
