Health Information Technology Degrees at Florida Colleges
There are several schools in Florida that offer health information technology degrees. Programs vary from associate's degrees to bachelor's degrees. Health information technology programs that are accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) are considered to be of high quality. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in health information technology are expected to grow faster than average through 2018. In 2008, the median salary for health information technologists was approximately $30,000.

Hodges University offers an associate's degree in health information technology. Graduates of the health information technology program will be eligible to take the national Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam. Students learn anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and medical coding. In addition students complete general education courses. The program requires completion of 70 credit hours in designated subject areas.
Polk State College

Polk State College offers an associate's degree in health information management. The program provides students with the necessary qualifications to take the RHIT exam. The associate's degree program requires 67 credit hours: 50 credit hours are in the specialized area of health information management, the remaining 17 credit hours are general education courses. The health information management courses consist of labs, lectures, and clinical practice where students gain hands-on degree-related experience.

Miami Dade College offers an associate's degree in health information management. The program requires 67 credit hours and takes approximately two years to complete. Students who complete the program will be eligible to take the RHIT exam. Miami Dade Colleges encourages prospective students to complete the general education requirements before applying to the program in order to reduce the student's course load. Although the school recommends this, doing so does not guarantee a place in the health information management program.
University of Central Florida

The University of Central Florida offers a bachelor's degree program in health informatics and information management. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam. The four-year degree program consists of courses in health information management and general education courses. Students must complete a five-week internship. The University of Central Florida has scholarships available for health informatics and information management students.
