Vacation Health Insurance

Taking a vacation can provide you with an opportunity to relax and get away from the grind of everyday life. When planning for a trip, many people do not take into consideration what could happen while they are gone. One often overlooked issue is what could happen if you need medical care while you are gone. To fill this need, you could choose to buy medical travel insurance.

  1. Foreign Medical Care

    • If you plan on vacationing inside the United States, your regular medical insurance will usually cover you. When you venture outside the United States for a trip, things can get much more confusing in this area. Most health insurance policies do not provide any benefits for medical care in other countries. Travel insurance can provide you with the ability to get into a medical facility and not have to pay the entire bill out of your own pocket.

    Medical Evacuation

    • Most people never consider the possibility of a major injury or illness while they are out of the country. If this occurs, you could find yourself in need of serious medical care. While the foreign hospital may be able to take care of your immediate medical needs, you may not want to stay in the foreign hospital for an extended period of time. In this case, you would need help with a medical evacuation. Travel insurance generally provides for this cost, but your regular health insurance will not.

    Preexisting Conditions

    • If you have a serious preexisting condition, you may not be able to get coverage for it while you are on vacation. Most travel insurance plans exclude these conditions and will not provide any benefits if you have to get medical treatment for it while you are away. Some policies will allow you to pay for an additional rider that will give you coverage for this preexisting condition. To get this kind of rider, you might have to pay a significant amount in premiums.

    Multi-Trip Policies

    • When you decide that you want travel insurance to cover your medical costs, you could buy coverage for a single trip or for multiple trips. Multi-trip insurance is a product that covers you for a specific amount of time regardless of how many trips that you take. For example, you could get a policy that lasts a year and any time you go on vacation during that year, you are covered. If you are a frequent traveler, this kind of insurance makes sense.
