The Ohio Commission on Dental Assistant Certification (OCDAC) requires certified dental assistants to complete a seven-hour approved coronal polishing training course, pass a board-approved Coronal Polishing exam and pay an applicable fee. Several schools in Ohio offer coronal polishing training that meets the standards set forth by OCDAC.
Cuyahoga Community College
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) has a dental assistant associate degree and certificate program. Courses in the certificate program include dental assisting radiology, biology and dental office management. The associate degree program consists of the same dental assisting courses as the certificate but also requires additional courses in general education. To take the Tri-C coronary polishing course, students must have a current dental assistant certificate. The course consists of three hours of lecture and four hours of lab work. To pass the course, students must receive a score of 75 percent or higher on the course exam.
Stark State College
Stark State College offers an associate degree in dental assisting. The courses covered include dental assisting techniques, dental assisting radiology and dental terminology. In addition to the dental assisting courses, students complete general education courses. To take Stark State College's coronal polishing course, students need to be certified dental assistants. The course meets the state's seven-hour requirements. In addition to certification as a dental assistant, students need to provide proof of immunizations and have a current CPR card.
Choffin Career and Technical Center
Choffin Career and Technical Center offers a full-time dental assisting program. The program takes approximately ten months to complete. The program meets the state's requirements for dental assistant certification. Students that complete the program will be eligible to receive 20 semester-hour credits at Youngstown State University in Allied Health. Certified dental assistants can complete the coronal polishing certificate at Choffin Career and Technical Center. The one-day, seven-hour course covers state requirements for coronal polishing certification. Students must pass the course exam with a score of 75 percent or better.
Sinclair Community College
While Sinclair Community College does not offer any dental assisting programs, the school does offer coronal polishing training. The one-day course provides students with the seven hours of training required to be certified by the state of Ohio. Students must currently be certified dental assistants and have a current CPR certification.
