Hunting Strategies for Ground Blinds
Ground blind is a term commonly used in deer hunting and it refers to any type of covering on the ground that "blinds" a deer from spotting a hunter visually, sometimes even through smell and hearing. Deer and other game have very sensitive visual, auditory and olfactory senses, and the main purpose of a ground blind is to hide the hunter from these senses. There are several hunting strategies that can help a hunter while utilizing ground blinds, and these strategies are often useful throughout the hunting season.
-
Deadfalls Strategy
-
A deadfall is a ground blind strategy where a hunter uses fallen leaves, tree trunks and branches to cover his or her location. This strategy is advisable when ambushing or waiting on a buck's usual trail, as deer normally see fallen trunks and branches piled up in a forest. A hunter using this strategy should wear forest camouflage to misdirect the buck's eyesight.
Pit Blind Strategy
-
Pit blinds are ideal ground blinds in large areas with grassy and open plains. This ground blind is just a pit that's about two to three feet deep and can be surrounded with a pile of brush and leaves for additional concealment. The idea behind using a pit blind strategy is that your location is below the buck's line of sight while it's grazing or moving around the open field. Some hunters prefer to sit on a small stool while concealed in a pit blind, while others prefer kneeling.
-
Hay Blind Strategy
-
This is one of the most basic ground blind strategies that hunters use in agricultural areas where hay bales are so common that bucks don't pay attention to them anymore. A hunter can go two ways: hide in hay bale that's been sitting on the field, or create a wire mesh enclosure he can sit inside and surround it with hay. Most bucks will ignore hay bales since they are used to seeing them, allowing the hunter to use this to his advantage.
Commercial Ground Blinds
-
A hunter can also utilize a commercially made ground blind if the above mentioned strategies won't in the hunting area. There are tons of styles and designs for commercial ground blinds, and buying one is one of the most basic hunting strategies for a beginner. Commercial ground blinds are designed for either rifle or bow users, and they can be set up easily on any type of terrain. Using an artificial ground blind is far easier than creating your own ground blind since they come with all the necessary colors and camouflage.
