The end of the school year is an exciting time for preschooler students. Not only have they successfully completed their first year of school, but they are on the doorstep of summertime fun and the beginning of their first year of elementary school -- kindergarten. With so much excitement, it can be difficult to get students to concentrate, as such, as the last day of school approaches, present kids with some fun activities.
To commemorate the preschool year, have a graduation ceremony on the last day of school. Invite parents to join in the commencement ceremony. Provide students with graduation hats to wear during the ceremony. Have them perform songs and plays they have learned throughout the school year. Invite them to share what they liked most about preschool and what they are looking forward to in kindergarten. At the end of the graduation, invite parents and students to join in a celebratory brunch.
Allow students to get their "sillies" out and exert their physical energy while enjoying the outdoors. Set up different outdoor games and activities in which to engage students. Different activities may include bike riding, playing with sidewalk chalk, three-legged races, going on a nature walk, playing a game of tag and blowing bubbles. Invite students to gather on a blanket and listen to a story. Enjoy a snack or dine on lunch while outside.
Have your current class make a poster to welcome the next year's class. Lay out a large piece of butcher paper and print "welcome" in the center of it using brightly colored markers. Have each student press her hands in finger paint and press them onto the butcher paper. Ask students what some of their favorite things were about preschool and write down their contributions underneath the word "welcome." Hang up the poster to provide the next preschool class with a warm welcome from the previous class.
Kids will enjoy being silly and wearing their pajamas to school for an end-of-the-year party. Invite kids to wear their favorite pair of pajamas to school and to bring their favorite stuffed animal and bedtime stories. Start the day with a show-and-tell -- students can share their stuffed animals and bedtimes stories. During story time, have them spread out on the floor and read them your favorite book. Order pizza for lunch and watch movies while eating popcorn.
