Ideas for a Fifth Grade Leaf Collection

Ideas for a Fifth Grade Leaf Collection thumbnail
Collecting leaves before they have dried out helps preserve their natural color to display in a collection.

Leaf collections may be a required part of fifth grade science curriculum, or perhaps an elective activity your student has chosen to take on. Either way, amassing a collection of leaves native to your area and displaying them in a creative fashion is sure to please teacher and student.

  1. Template Sheets

    • Create a blank template sheet, using a computer word processing program, that features blank spaces for students to fill in the name of the tree, color of the leaf, size of the trees, interesting facts and a short description of the tree. As leaves are collected and dried, affix them to the corresponding template sheets. Place each leaf and template into a protective plastic sleeve and display the collection in a three-ring binder.

    Scrapbook Collection

    • Collect a wide range of leaves and press them inside a heavy book to dry. Protect the leaves and pages of the book by placing the leaf between a folded piece of wax paper, or clear contact paper. Once the leaves have dried, remove them from the book and create a special scrapbook page for each leaf that features information about the leaf and the plant from which it came.

    Leaf Rubbings

    • Incorporate leaf rubbings, along with dried leaves, to the collection. Create rubbings by finding a prime example of each required leaf and placing it underneath of a sheet of clean 8.5"x11" white paper, with the back of the leaf facing up. Remove the paper from a crayon, and lay the crayon on its side to rub it over the area of the paper where the leaf is. The end result will be a crayon outline of the leaf that can be incorporated to scrapbook collections.

    Electronic Collection

    • Once the leaves for the collection have been assembled, scan them into a computer using a flatbed scanner. Include an index card with each scan that features the student's name and identification of the leaf. Assemble the scanned leaves, along with text that lists the required information about the leaf, into a slide presentation or personal website to create an electronic leaf collection.
