Grants & Scholarships for Quilting
If you like to sew quilts and have a larger project that you would like to incorporate quilts into, such as writing a book, researching the history of quilts or teaching others how to quilt, you might want to look into receiving a grant to help you reach your goals. Many different quilting organizations offer grants for different projects. Looking into some of these grants and scholarships can get you motivated and help you fund your project.
-
National Quilting Association
-
The National Quilting Association is a good place to start, especially if your idea is to focus on the history of quilts. The NEA helps to fund projects, such as researching the history behind the different quilt blocks or interviewing or researching biographies of famous quilt makers. The NEA sees quilting as an art that they want to help share with people in all communities. The amount of the award may vary a little as the funds are raised through auctions and individual donors.
Minnesota Quilt Guild
-
Residents of Minnesota may qualify for the Minnesota Quilt Guild's grants. They offer grants ranging from $100 to $2000, as of 2011 depending on your project. They primarily focus on the teaching of quilt-making to people in communities throughout Minnesota. However, you must prove yourself to be a non-profit organization or individual as the grant money cannot cover salaries or to purchase items that might only benefit the receiver.
-
American Quilt Study Group
-
The American Quilt Study Group offers scholarships and grants to individuals who really want to delve into the research of quilts. You can use the money to research about quilts, attend quilting seminars and even put money toward publishing a book on the history of quilting. The American Quilt Study Group has different grants and scholarships available. One is the Meredith Scholar Award, which awards $10,000 as of 2011 (separated) to different researchers performing exceptional work in the area of quilting. The Lucy Hilty Research Grant awards money to those documenting the quilting industry from the fabrics to the quilt makers. If you want to attend one of their seminars, but funds are low, you may be eligible for a scholarship. Applications are due by the beginning of May each year. The award will pay your seminar registration fee.
Tall Pines Quilt Guild
-
Young people can apply for grants and scholarships geared toward quilting as well. Tall Pines Quilt Guild offers scholarships to high school seniors who show promise in the sewing and math fields. They offer seven $1000 scholarships per year as of 2011.
