Purposes of a Headboard

A headboard can add comfort and style to a room.

Headboards are extensions that lie at the head of a bed and can be free-standing, attached to the bed's frame or attached to the wall behind the bed. Though not a necessary part of the bed, headboards usually add a decorative or utilitarian element to the bedroom. In some cases, a headboard may be a sentimental piece of furniture that is passed down as a family heirloom.

To Complete the Look of the Bed

While the decision to add a headboard to your bed is a matter of personal taste, they remain a popular and common piece of furniture and many people don't think twice about "needing" one even though it's not necessary for the bed to function. In this case, a headboard may make the bedroom look more complete than having a bare wall behind the bed. While a homeowner with modern, minimalist taste may forgo a headboard, a homeowner who wishes to add Victorian or country style to their room would likely choose a headboard to pull the look together.

For Use as a Backrest

People who enjoy reading in bed may prefer an upholstered headboard for use as a backrest. While a wall may work just as well, an upholstered headboard adds more padding -- almost like sitting on a couch. These types of headboards, while useful and comfortable, also add style to the room. They may be done in neutral fabrics or bold patterns for those who are partial to color.

In small bedrooms with minimal space, a headboard can function as a storage area. Bookshelves are a popular choice for headboards, as are cubby areas containing seagrass baskets to hide clutter. Floating wall shelves outfitted with picture frames and tealight candles are also a popular idea to add function to the headboard area.

As a Focal Point of the Room

For those whose bedroom lacks a certain drama, they may wish to make the headboard the star of the room. A bold headboard may be simple but oversized or small and stylized. A dramatic headboard commands attention and is the main focal point of not only the bed, but the entire bedroom.
