Birthday Crafts for Moms
Kids of any age know that celebrating Mom's birthday can include a time to show off craft skills by creating a gift Mom will treasure. From the simple to the complex, you can make a gift for Mom that is unique and able to express your love and appreciation on her birthday.

Photographic Shirt
-
Purchase a T-shirt or sweatshirt in Mom's size and favorite color. Use iron-on transfer paper and your printer to create the photo or photos to decorate the shirt. (You may want to print them in reverse.) Use a hot dry iron to transfer each picture onto the shirt according to the directions on the transfer paper package. Let the image cool about three minutes before gently stretching the shirt until the paper loosens enough to slowly peel off the fabric. Iron the shirt with a piece of clean, white paper between the iron and the images. Turn the shirt inside out and rinse in warm water. Dry on medium heat.
Use fabric paint, trim, ribbons, buttons and other craft items to embellish the pictures on the shirt.
Kitchen Organizer
-
If Mom has utensils crowding her kitchen drawers, make a holder to hold those she uses most often. Locate a metal or ceramic cylinder large enough to hold the items. Spray paint the outside of the cylinder a uniform color and allow it to fully dry. Draw a design in pencil on the outside of the dry cylinder or use tracing paper to copy a design. Use acrylic paints to color in your design and allow it to dry.

Homemade Sun Catcher
-
Choose an appropriate design with clear, distinct lines and details. The more simple the design, the easier it will be to transfer it to glass. Purchase a picture frame about the size of your design. Remove the glass from the frame and lay it flat over the design. Use liquid glass paint leading to draw the design onto the glass. Be careful not to bump the glass and shift it over the paper.
After the leading dries, begin to color in the design with stained glass paints. You may want to use a pin or toothpick to pop the air bubbles and to push the paint into small spaces and corners. Allow the paint to fully dry before lifting it up off your flat surface.
Use a hot glue gun to glue the glass into the frame and add a hanger. Cover the dry, painted glass with plastic wrap or wax paper before wrapping to prevent damage.
Family Recipe File
-
Purchase a three ring binder with a plastic sleeve cover. Paint, cross-stitch, or draw a design for the cover and slide it into the sleeve where it will stay clean and dry. Print favorite family recipes using a recipe card template or hand-write them on 4-by-6 index cards. Slide each card into a recipe cardholder slot (found in many office supply stores). Add dividers and a table of contents.
