Seahorse Projects for School
The seahorse is one of the most intriguing fish in the ocean; from their upright swimming pattern to their long snouts, these creatures are worth studying in the classroom. All age groups will find something fascinating about seahorses, whether it's kindergarteners learning what a seahorse eats, third graders learning how seahorses propel themselves through the water, or high schoolers brainstorming ways to save seahorse habitat. A seahorse theme can be interdisciplinary as well; you can plan seahorse lessons in language arts, biology, geography or art.

Seahorse Reef: A Story of the South Pacific
-
The Smithsonian's book, "Seahorse Reef: A Story of the South Pacific," is an accurate depiction of a seahorse's life, seen through the eyes of a seahorse going about its day. Children can learn about the habits of seahorses through this story and afterward can write their own seahorse diary. Have students keep a log for the whole seahorse unit, writing just a sentence if the students are young, or a whole paragraph each day about their seahorse life if they are more advanced.
Life-cycle Wheels
-
One unusual seahorse adaptation is the way they reproduce, with the males taking eggs from the female and giving birth. Make a life-cycle wheel out of paper plates showing the different stages of seahorse development. Instead of having the students draw on the plates, you could give them coloring pages to cut out and glue on. Have one picture of the egg, one of the baby seahorses, one of the adult seahorses, and one of the pregnant father seahorse.

Seahorse Search
-
Seahorses blend in with their surroundings in the seaweeds and on the rocky bottoms of the oceans. Show students some pictures of camouflaged seahorses, and play a "Where's Waldo" type game to see how many they can find. Discuss seahorse habitat and where they are found in the world. Older students can learn about endangered seahorses and connect the search for seahorses to a problem-solving project where students generate ideas for how to help conserve seahorses and their coastal homes.
Seahorse Craft
-
Make a seahorse craft with your students after showing them close-up photographs of the anatomy of a seahorse. Give students a large piece of blue paper and a seahorse template to cut out in whatever color they wish. Add a wiggle eye and some tissue paper folded accordion-style for fins. Let students add some further embellishments, such as glitter, sequins or tissue paper spots. Cut out green seaweed and dark stones to glue onto the page around the seahorse, too.
