Art Schools in Virginia

Students seeking an undergraduate art education in Virginia have a wide range of choices throughout the state.

Hollins University

Hollins University, located on a 475-acre campus in Roanoke, Virginia, was ranked in the top 100 U.S. universities by Forbes and Princeton Review in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, the Fiske Guide to Colleges ranked Hollins one of the top seven women's colleges in the United States and gave high praise for its studio art department. As of 2010, 1,036 students were enrolled in undergraduate and graduate studies at the university. Female enrollments accounted for over 75 percent of the student body. The Studio Art major requires 50 credits in addition to an internship. Students also have the opportunity to study abroad in Italy during summer session. Annual tuition and fees cost $39,685, with additional fees for the study abroad program.
Virginia Commonwealth University

Virginia Commonwealth University offers 12 Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in diverse areas, such as Craft/Material Studies, Painting/Printmaking and Sculpture/Extended Media. All entering freshman participate in a year-long Art Foundation program as a prerequisite for entrance into the Fine Arts program. The Art Foundation program consists of four courses: Drawing, Surface, Space and Time. Students conclude the program with a student project. Students must submit a visual portfolio in addition to the VCU application for entrance into the Arts Foundation program. Tuition for 2010 was $21,536 for non-residents and $8,817 for residents of Virginia.

The University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville, features a BFA in Studio Arts. Courses cover drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. Additional areas of study include photography, media studies and film. Summer study abroad opportunities are available in Fiorentino, Italy. Students also visit Rome, Florence, Venice and other areas of interest in Italy during the summer program. In 2010, the cost of education, including tuition, fees and room and board totals $22,543 for residents of Virginia. Out-of-state students pay $46,219 annually.
Lynchburg College

The Bachelors of Arts in Studio Arts from Lynchburg College in central Virginia requires six semesters within the area of study. Students may choose an emphasis in drawing, sculpture, painting, photography, or graphic design. Progress reviews with art faculty and staff are required at the end of each year. Study abroad programs feature semester and year long study in Austria, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Full time annual tuition as of 2011 is $28,960, or $400 per semester hour.
