A number of theater schools across Europe and North America offer valuable training experiences to student performers.

Academic institutions around the world incorporate conservatory and degree programs in theater into their educational offerings. The intensive training and possibility for networking opportunities provided by these rigorous fine arts programs attract many aspiring actors, directors and playwrights. Due to the competitive nature of the arts, many of these programs require preliminary auditions before allowing students to begin courses. Many of the celebrated theater arts schools have made names for themselves through the success of their alumni.

  1. The Juilliard School

    • The Juilliard School is located in New York City at Lincoln Center. The theater program offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting, as well as an Artist Diploma for playwrights. Faculty for the two programs include theater producer Richard Feldman, director Rebecca Guy and playwrights Christopher Durang and Marsha Norman. Prospective applicants to the acting program must complete an online application and attend a live audition. Students wishing to enter the Artist Diploma program must submit a full-length play for consideration.

    Yale School of Drama

    • With noted alumni such as Paul Newman and Meryl Streep, the Yale School of Drama is one of the world's premier theater training schools. The School of Drama offers several programs of study within the realm of theater: students can apply to programs in acting, directing, sound design, stage design, playwriting, theater management and technical design. Application requirements vary with each program. Disciplines such as acting and directing require a live audition in addition to a completed application. Students applying to the design programs are required to submit a portfolio displaying their creative work.

    UCLA School of Theater

    • Located in Los Angeles, the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television offers Master of Fine Arts degrees in acting, design, directing, playwriting, and theater studies. A Bachelor of Arts in theater is also available to undergraduate students. Students in the theater program at UCLA are able to collaborate with filmmakers and theater professionals working in Los Angeles and Hollywood. Prospective applicants are required to complete an online application, and may be required to audition for the faculty within their chosen department.

    Guildhall School of Music And Drama

    • The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in England offers training in acting, music and technical theater. The Guildhall School awards Master of Arts degrees to students in the three-year acting. vocal training and movement training programs. Students interested in attending the Guildhall School must successfully complete three auditions. Tuition for study varies according to the student's country of origin: students residing outside of the European Union must pay a significantly higher tuition rate. Prospective students can complete their applications online.
