Safari Cake Decorating Ideas
There's no one perfect way to decorate a Safari cake --- cakes that may remind us of a journey in Africa. Designs can be as varied as the decorator's imagination. However, all safari designs share a few basic concepts. Safari cakes include wild animals, trees, foliage and natural color schemes. Keep in mind how many people you plan to feed when designing cakes. Tiered layered cakes or sheet cakes are recommended for large numbers of guests. Does this Spark an idea?

Layers/Tiers
-
Layers can be stacked on top of each other or set side-by-side as separate sections. The layers can be different shapes and sizes. Tiers can be used if you don't want to stack the layers on top of each other. Each section can be decorated in different colors and designs or be combined to make one design. Cupcakes can be layered on top of the base to create boulders and bluffs. Tier supports can be decorated with green frosting leaves, or they can be toy animals.
Kits/Free Hand Designs
-
If you're short on time or don't have decorating experience, you can still create a beautiful safari cake. Kits are available at most retailers that sell cake-decorating supplies. After smoothing colored icing over the cake, add the kit pieces. There are also many freehand designs to use. Pretzel sticks with green frosting can become palm trees; animals can be toys or perhaps create them from "candy clay." Fondant can be used to create letters, borders, trees and leaves. Safari vehicle toys can be added for effect.

Difficulty Level
-
When planning to bake and decorate the perfect safari cake design, keep in mind how much time you have to create your masterpiece. Some designs you find online can take hours, while easier designs can take as little as 20 minutes. Of course, if kits are used, the preparation time is greatly reduced. One-layer sheet cakes are the easiest to decorate. Remember to have fun with your safari design and add your own personal touch.
Shapes/Sizes
-
Safari cakes are many shapes and sizes. Square cakes make good bases for tiers. Of course, circular cakes can layered, but remember the law of gravity when adding tiers to a circular cake; make the top layer smaller than the base. The number of expected guests should be considered when deciding the cake's size. Cake pans of various shapes and sizes are available in stores, or you can use any baking dish in your cabinet. Square cakes can be cut into what ever shape you need.
