Zoologists bring the lessons of many scientific disciplines to the study of animals.

Zoology is, broadly, the study of animals. Many universities and colleges offer zoology majors. School zoology programs vary in their requirements, but most programs encourage students to study many fields of science, including biology, neuroscience, physiology, ecology, toxicology, chemistry and environmental science. Some schools have specific departments of zoology; others administer zoology degree programs through a different science department, such as a biology department.

  1. Miami University

    • Miami University has a zoology department that offers a zoology major. Miami is in Oxford, a picturesque small college town in southwestern Ohio. The zoology program at Miami University is research-intensive and allows students to spend a lot of time in laboratories. With 34 faculty members, Miami's zoology department is a large academic unit that affords students the opportunity to study under professors with a wide range of experience and academic expertise.

    North Carolina State University

    • The department of biology at North Carolina State University allows students to major in zoology. Situated in Raleigh, North Carolina State has over 31,000 students. Students can earn a bachelor of science degree in zoology by completing the department's zoology curriculum. Students who major in zoology and enter the program after fall 2009 are required to take classes in zoological sciences and physical and mathematical sciences to earn their degree.

    University of Florida

    • The department of biology at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, offers a zoology major as well as majors in biology and botany. The department allows students who major in zoology to choose from among three areas of specialization: a general specialization in zoology, pre-professional specialization for those who seek to attend veterinary or medical school, and an education specialization for those who plan to use their degree to teach.

    Michigan State University

    • Michigan State University in East Lansing has a department of zoology. Students can earn a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree in zoology. For zoology students interested in participating in extracurricular activities related to their major, a Zoological Students Association on campus organizes activities and events pertaining to the study of zoology.

    University of Wisconsin--Madison

    • The University of Wisconsin-Madison's department of zoology offers a major in zoology. The department also has an honors zoology program, in which gifted students complete an honors seminar and research and write a thesis during their senior year. The University of Wisconsin Zoological Museum is located on campus.
