Third Grade Social Geography Projects
Many third grade students are required to complete social studies -- also known as social geography -- projects as a part of their school's regular curriculum. There are a variety of age-appropriate projects your student can complete. These projects can be fun and educational for young students.
-
State or Regional Project
-
Third grade students can attempt a state or regional project. Students can make simple presentations on a state -- their home state or a state of their choice -- and describe the major features of the state, such as the food, state bird, state tree, state flag, state motto, important landmarks and famous people. Or, the students can complete a project on an entire region, such as the "Food of the Southwest," "Indian Tribes of the Midwest" or "State Birds in the South."
50 State Project
-
Another project students can take on is a project focusing on a particular feature of all the states, the United States as a whole. The project can center around state mottoes or popular geographic features of the country. This is a good project for an entire third grade class because students can be separated into groups, with each group covering a different region or different national feature.
-
Single Continent Project
-
A third grade student can focus on a single continent for a social geography project. The student can hone in on the general culture of the continent or focus on one aspect, such as dance traditions or religion, examined in several countries of a continent. Of course, Antarctica would be the one continent to be avoided, unless the student is reporting on research that is done there or the wildlife.
Seven Continent Project
-
Third grade students can conduct a comprehensive project focusing on all seven continents. The project can be a presentation on the famous mountain ranges of the world, a project on the music of different continents, a presentation on a famous people from each continent (or who explored the continent, in the case of Antarctica) or any other topic that can be discussed with regards to all of the continents.
