Gift Basket Gift Ideas for the College Bound
As the young one leaves the nest and enters college, there will be many lessons for him to learn. One of these is self-reliance. To assist and ease the transition, package several small gifts to prepare him along the way. Hopefully, he learns to replenish this himself as he steps into independence.

School Supplies
-
A large briefcase -- or rollable backpack -- substitutes for your gift basket as you prepare the college student's gift. Fill it with the items required for good grades, such as pens, pencils and notebooks to take notes or consider a digital recorder for him to record the class. Throw in computer paper for class projects or reports, a prepaid copy card for a local copy chain for those late night reports, and a book light so he may read in his room at night.
Room Decor
-
She will want to personalize her dorm so give her the items she'll need in her laundry gift basket. Add a new comforter with matching bedding, a new robe with pajamas and slippers and a couple of large comfortable towels. Laundry soap along with shampoo, conditioner, shower gels and a loofah keep her clean. Add a hammer, screwdriver, nails, picture wire and frames to complete the basket.

Safety
-
Prepare a first aid kit for him. Liquid band aids, hydrogen peroxide, gauze, antiseptic cream, compresses and tape take care of small wounds, while aspirin, cold medicine, throat lozenges and cough syrup take care of flu or colds. Or, consider a safety kit for his car as you put flares, jumper cables, batteries, a flashlight, oil and antifreeze together in a small plastic container. Add duct tape, fuses, screwdrivers and bottled water with snacks to the gift.
Snacks
-
A care package filled with snacks and treats will ease her ride to the college and sustain her while she gets her bearings. A small microwave filled with packaged microwave soups, macaroni and cheese and popcorn gives her hot food. Add a couple of cans of chili, ravioli and vegetables. Dishes and silverware, along with non-perishable snacks, like cookies, candies or pretzels, work well, as do coffee, hot chocolate, cider and a variety of tea bags.
