Resources for Nutritionists
The career of a nutritionist can be very rewarding and meaningful. A nutritionist may work in a social service agency, a nursing care facility, a hospital, outpatient care center, physician's office, child care facility, gym or other health related business. They plan meals, supervise food preparation and recommend dietary modifications. There are numerous resources to help nutritionists as well as those wanting to develop a career as a nutritionist.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has an extensive examination of the career of nutritionist and dietitians. The listing in the most recent Occupational Outlook Handbook explains the nature of the work done by a nutritionist, the licensing requirements, the job outlook, the locations for employment and the projected earnings. It also outlines related occupational fields. This website is useful for those considering a career as a nutritionist.
American Dietetic Association

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) is a professional organization for food and nutrition professionals. They attempt to increase the overall health and wellness of the country through licensing, research and education.The ADA accredits educational institutions for training dietitians and nutritionists. They also administer licensing examinations for independent credentials. These are separate from professional licensing required by 46 of the 50 states in the U.S., but a person who earns the registered dietitian (RD) credential may also meet the requirements for state certification.

The Mayo Clinic website has excellent resources that a nutritionist can use to help clients and do further research. One of the resources is a calorie calculator. This helps nutritionists and their clients estimate the number of calories they need to maintain body weight or lose weight. The website also has ideas for lowering salt in the diet, watching fats, using caffeine and the differences between whole grain and multi grain, among other topics. A working nutritionist as well as a potential nutritionist could find the site useful.
Society for Nutrition Education

The Society for Nutrition Education (SNE) is a professional organization for nutrition educators. Among the numerous resources found at the SNE website is the My Pyramid resources that help educators implement the US Department of Agriculture food pyramid guidelines in their educational curriculum. Both sites offer excellent resources for working nutritionists.
