Student Dorm Gifts

When buying gifts for a student who is living in a college dorm room, keep in mind that this is her home away from home. The space is typically small and shared with another student. Take into consideration the size of the gift and whether it would be a welcomed addition to this small space. If you are shipping the gift, factor in shipping fees when deciding your budget.

  1. Storage

    • Since space is limited, so additional storage options are a welcome addition to any dorm room. A trunk for storing seasonal clothing could sit at the end of a student's bed. Plastic bins with lids that easily slide under the bed can accommodate items like sweaters, shoes and important papers. Stackable crates (similar to milk crates) can be used for books, clothing, small appliances and personal grooming essentials. Extra shelving units could be used in closets for books, clothing and shoes.

    Bedding

    • Any item that can help turning a student's assigned twin-sized bed into a comfortable place to lounge and sleep would be a welcome gift. Since the mattress may not be what the student is accustomed to, consider giving the resident a feather bed to fit on top of the dorm-issued mattress. This will make the bed more comfortable. Add a few sets of twin-sized sheets. Find out the student's dorm room color scheme and give her a comforter or bedspread. Don't forget pillows to complete this whole package.

    Small Appliances

    • Time-saving appliances make great gifts. Students may not always have time to visit the dining hall before or after classes. Some ideas for small appliances are coffee maker, microwave, toaster and small refrigerator. (Check to make sure the dorm rules allow these items.) You could also buy dishes, eating utensils and drinking glasses. Buy a small reading lamp or a night light. A clothes iron and small ironing board make great gifts as well.

    Personal Grooming

    • To save the student time and money, a gift basket of personal grooming necessities would be helpful. Buy shampoo and hair conditioner, razors, body wash, face soap, body moisturizer and moisturizers, a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, cotton balls, cotton swabs, vitamins, bandages, ointments and salves, pain relievers, hydrogen peroxide, and rubbing alcohol. Place these items in a caddy that she could used to carry the items into the bathroom. You could also buy a laundry basket with detergent, bleach and fabric softener.

    Gift Cards

    • Buy retail gift cards if you cannot decide what to purchase. This will offer the student freedom to purchase his dorm room essentials either online or at the store location. Gift cards can be mailed or sent through email. Most gift cards do not expire, but cannot be replaced if lost or stolen.
