Middle School Sponge Activities
Sponge activities are used as fillers in a classroom, ensuring that time not covered by lesson plans is "soaked up" and never wasted. Typically the activities are designed to review material that has already been taught, therefore middle school sponges should coincide with current curriculum.

Presidents and States

List as many American presidents as you can remember. Add a fact about each president, if possible. Try to put the presidents in order. List all 50 states in alphabetical order along with a fun fact about the state. For additional practice, list the capital and identify all the states on a blank map.
Career and Home

List three careers that you are interested in pursuing. Explain what you think someone who works in those careers does on a daily basis. Also explain why you think you would be good at those careers. Design and draw your dream house. Write a paragraph explaining the details of the home including where it is located and any special features.

Invention and Animal

Describe a new invention. Explain its purpose and why it is needed. Develop a campaign to market the item. Design a new animal. Explain what it looks like, where it lives and what it eats. Draw a picture of the animal.
Town and Community

Make a drawing of a new town. Add grocery stores, restaurants and neighborhoods. Be sure to include roads, a police station, fire station and other important amenities.
Identify a problem in your community. Explain what you would do to solve it
Meal and Movie Review

Plan a nutritious meal for your family and friends. Create a shopping list that includes all the items that would have to be purchased. Estimate how much it would cost to make the meal. Summarize a movie that you recently watched. Give a detailed review of the movie including why you did or did not like it.
Friend and Vocabulary

Describe what the word "Friendship" means to you. Explain what qualities make you a good friend. Write a story about friends using all of the current vocabulary words. Incorporate words from previous lessons as well.
Noises and Nouns

Look around the room and list all the nouns that you can see. Do the same with verbs. Listen carefully and explain all of the noises that you currently hear.
