Hotels Near the Cliff House in San Francisco
The Cliff House is the site of two seafood restaurants on the cliffs north of Ocean Beach in San Francisco. It originally opened in 1863, although it has changed its appearance several times since then, due to fires and renovations. The National Park System acquired the Cliff House in 1977, and it is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Sutro Historic District
-
The Cliff House is in the Sutro Historic District in northwest San Francisco, named for former mayor, Adolph Sutro, who purchased the Cliff House in 1883 after building a mansion overlooking the Cliff House grounds. Visitors to the district can see the Sutro Heights Gardens, opened to the public by Sutro in 1880 and, after a period of decline, is again a notable spot for sightseers. Sutro also built the Sutro Baths on three acres below the Cliff House. The glass-enclosed bath house was large enough to accommodate 25,000 swimmers with six salt water swimming tanks. It had private dressing rooms, an arcade and restaurants. The building burned in 1966, but the ruins are visible from the Cliff House. A camera obscura, a small camera-shaped building that uses a large lens and mirror to take images from the outside and project them inside, is located on the grounds of the Cliff House.
