Popular Medieval MMORPG Games
There are dozens of massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPGs) available in the fantasy genre, with new ones being introduced every year. Some never reach a critical mass of players or subscribers for long term success, while others are perennial favorites with millions of avid players worldwide and a thriving in-game economy.

World of Warcraft
-
World of Warcraft is the proverbial 800 lb. gorilla in the world of MMORPGs. With more than 12 million subscribers worldwide as of late 2010, it boasts the largest number of players of any game, according to Guinness World Records. World of Warcraft takes place on the fictional world of Azeroth, where players control an avatar during quests and fights, interacting with other players and in-game characters. The game is subscription based and is available for Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X.
The Lord of the Rings Online
-
The Lord of the Rings Online is based on the novels by J.R.R. Tolkein. It was released in 2007 and has two additional expansion packs available. The main quest, or Epic Quest Line, is in the form of chapters in several books. After reaching level 10, players can fight other players in a combat form called Monster Play. The game is only available for Microsoft Windows and is subscription-based with a free-to-play option.

Final Fantasy XIV
-
Final Fantasy XI and XIV are MMORPGs in the successful Final Fantasy franchise, which has also produced many console computer games. Final Fantasy XI exceeded 2 million players at its height, while the relatively new Final Fantasy XIV has sold about 630,000 copies. The older game is available on Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2, and is subscription-based, while the newer game is only available on Windows at the moment.
EverQuest 2
-
EverQuest 2, like World of Warcraft, has been around since 2004. It has a much smaller subscriber base than the others, at around 200,000 active players, but remains a well-respected MMORPG. It is only available for Windows. EverQuest 2 places most of the gameplay emphasis on quests, rather than player versus player combat. Progression through the levels relies heavily on acquiring equipment and other objects. The game offers many opportunities and options for contact with other players.
