High School Costume Ideas That Are Girly

Dressing up for a costume party or school event in high school can be a challenge. Some high school girls may want costumes that are more mature than the ones younger girls wear, but they still have to be age appropriate. Fortunately, there are a number of easy-to-put-together costume ideas that will leave high school girls feeling feminine.

  1. 1950s Girl

    • Play up your femininity by dressing like a girl straight out of a 1950s sock hop. The essential item in this costume is the poodle skirt. Check thrift stores for recycled poodle skirts, or ask your mom to help you create one with a basic pattern. Choose a feminine color like pink or purple. Pair the skirt with a crew-neck white T-shirt and a colorful cardigan. Wear your hair in a high ponytail, accentuate your lips with red lipstick and don't forget your saddle shoes.

    Audrey Hepburn

    • A fashion role model for decades, Audrey Hepburn epitomizes femininity. Plus, this costume is mature enough that a high schooler can pull it off. Find a classically cut sheath dress; look for one that hits around the knee and has a high neckline. Adorn the dress in plenty of pearls: a pearl necklace, bracelet or earrings will do the trick. Wear your hair up in a classic French twist, off of your face. Wear neutral makeup, but play up your eyes with black eyeliner.

    Beauty Queen

    • If you love to be the center of attention, choose a beauty queen costume that is feminine and fabulous. Best of all, you can recycle your old prom dress, or a friend's old dress, as the base for your costume. Pair your evening gown with a homemade sash that declares you "Miss (High School Name)." Think big on the hair and makeup. Tease your hair and set it in rollers to give it volume. Wear brightly colored makeup that complements your gown color.

    Fairy Tale Characters

    • Choose from a number of popular fairy tale characters as an innocent but girly costume. Go as Alice from the classic children's book "Alice in Wonderland" and wear a short-sleeved blue dress with a white apron. Wear white tights and black saddle shoes. Wear your hair down with soft makeup. You can also go as Snow White: just pair a yellow skirt with a blue and red top. If you have light hair, wear a dark-haired wig in a bob style. Wear bright red lipstick and a red ribbon in your hair as a headband.
