From their first date in 1942 to their wedding in 2009 and beyond, Archie Andrews and Veronica Lodge, along with the sweet, tragic Betty Cooper, have entertained comic fans with their eternal love triangle. Archie's and Veronica's styles and adventures have changed through the years, but their relationship -- a middle-class all-American boy courting a wealthy, cool sub-debutante -- has remained constant. Depending on your resources and the nature of your costume party, dressing as Archie and Veronica as a couple or as part of a Riverdale-themed group costume has several possibilities.

Archie's and Veronica's Appearance

Archie's and Veronica's hair and facial features are basically the same in any situation or decade. Veronica has blue-black, medium-length hair with bangs, and Archie has short red hair. Veronica's hair is elaborately curled for her wedding, but when dressing as the all-American couple or for their first date, she has just the ends of her hair curled under, leaving the rest straight. In the late 60s and early 70s, Veronica's hair was flipped out at the ends, consistent with the styles of the times.
Archie's hair is always shaved neatly on the sides with longer, curled bangs. With clippers, you can emulate the classic "tic-tac-toe" crosshatching on the sides of his hair. The right hair is the key to a recognizable Archie costume. Archie also has freckles, so add them with eyebrow pencil if you don't have them already.
Archie and Veronica's First Date

Archie and Veronica had two "first dates," both occurring in 1942. In Pep Comics #26 (April 1942), Veronica was first introduced and Archie, with money earned washing dishes, tried to impress her with an expensive dinner date at the restaurant where he worked. In Archie #1 (Winter 1942), a fan letter from Archie convinced Veronica Lodge, a famous sub-deb, to accompany him to prom. Dress up in Veronica's first-date garb with a strapless, long red evening gown with white lace trim and a black choker with a black, centered piece of jewelry. Match Veronica's accessories -- a white flower in your hair, a white clutch purse and a pair of red gloves. Emulate Veronica's prom attire with a long, strapless white evening gown slit up one leg, white gloves, white high heels, and a corsage with yellow flowers. Archie wore a black coat and tails, white collared shirt and black bow-tie for both dates, along with white socks and black dress shoes.

The All-American Couple

For the most recognizable Archie and Veronica costumes, dress in their classic 50s attire worn at school and Pop Tate's Choklit Shoppe. Archie's quintessential get-up was a white, collared shirt tucked into a cuffed pair of blue pants with a white belt. Over the shirt, wear a black sweater vest with white trim, and cut an "R" out of felt and sew it on the vest, for Riverdale. To accessorize Archie, wear a red bow-tie, (white polka dots optional) and a pair of saddle shoes with white socks. Veronica's retro style varies, but she often wore a fitted crew-neck sweater (short or long sleeves), a knee-length skirt, bobby socks and saddle shoes.

The Archies were a bubblegum band in the 60s and 70s, crossing over into reality with their hit "Sugar, Sugar." If you have group that wants to dress like The Archies, choose from Betty (tambourine), Jughead (drums), Reggie (Bass), Veronica (keyboard) and Archie (lead guitar). Have fun with this -- the group wore loud, mod-style clothing, such as a loud, button-up shirt with colorful bell-bottoms for Archie and the guys, or for Veronica and Betty, knee-high, heeled vinyl boots, a colorful, v-neck top and striped miniskirt.
Archie and Veronica Get Married

In 2009, Archie, after more than 65 years of deliberation, shocked and outraged fans with his decision to marry Veronica over Betty. In fact, this was part of an ongoing fantasy storyline, and a marriage to Betty was also explored. For the wedding to Veronica, Archie wore a white, collared shirt, a lavender vest with black buttons, a black bowtie, a black suit jacket with long tails and a fuchsia flower in his lapel. His pants were dark gray and pinstriped, and his shoes were black dress shoes. Veronica wore a floor-length, scoop-necked white wedding dress with lace trim on the ruffled sleeves and hem, a translucent white veil with lace trim and a purple tiara, a gold bangle bracelet and gold earrings.
