  1. University of Louisville School of Medicine

    • Located in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville provides medical students with degrees that include Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Master of Arts (M.A.) The University also provides patient care, which medical students assist in by working in the hospital wing.

      The school boasts one-on-one time with attending physicians in a hands-on setting. Residents also receive a monthly stipend that increases with time, starting at $3,983, as of 2008.

    Professional Healthcare Institute of America

    • Though Professional Healthcare Institute of America (PHIA) does not provide M.D.s, the school provides training in medicine-related programs that include physician and hospital coding, specialist auditing and billing. Located in eastern Louisville in the St. Regis Park neighborhood near Norton Suburban Hospital, the school offers both on-site and online programs to earn certificates in hospital-related fields. Certification takes approximately nine months.

      Depending on the skill level and length of a chosen course, it costs range from $695 to $2,495, as of 2009.

    University of Kentucky College of Medicine

    • The medical school at the University of Kentucky, located approximately 75 miles from Louisville in Lexington, provides degrees in medicine that include M.D.s, Ph.D.s, and Masters of Public Health (M.P.H.s), among others. The college emphasizes exposing students to clinical settings early in their schooling, with students strongly encouraged by faculty to provide long-term care for specific patients -- up to 16 weeks -- to better grasp the full effects of disease.

    Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine

    • Located about a four-hour drive from Louisville, Pikeville, Kentucky, is home to the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine (PCSOM). This school focuses on "rural medicine" - providing medical care in hospitals and clinics in a rural environment - and provides specific emphases in manual medicine, community and behavioral medicine, and ambulatory care.

      Students at PCSOM spend their first two years of schooling in labs and lecture halls and their last two years in clinical settings, rotating among emergency rooms, surgical centers, family practices, rural clinics, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology.
