Animated Chess Games
Chess is one of the most widespread games in the world, and physical and digital versions are ubiquitous. It is not as easy to find an animated 3D game that shows full movement instead of the pieces just "teleporting" from one square to another. Nevertheless, animated games offer a whole different level of chess experience, with some of them taking the action off the classic board.

Chessmaster
-
"Chessmaster," which began with computer-only games in the '80s, proclaims itself the best-selling chess series ever. The Xbox version from 2008 has some boards where the pieces will literally attack each other. It has more than 30 boards, and some of the pieces on them have their own way of moving. The difficulty modes range from beginner to master, and online competitive matches are available via Xbox LIVE.
Online Chess Kingdoms
-
"Online Chess Kingdoms" replaces the black-and-white board with environments like mythical forests, burning infernos and sky kingdoms, each with its own special warriors. This PSP game resembles a typical RPG (Role Playing Game), but the characters rely on chess rules instead of attack points. As the name suggests, its Wi-Fi capabilities make it possible to play with real opponents. It also has an off-line game option for those content to play against the computer.

Classic Chess
-
Don't expect any warriors fighting in exotic locations in "Classic Chess." This PC title sticks to basics. The player has a view over a regular board and competes against the CPU or a real opponent via network play. It's got an educational component in its Classic Game mode, where players can see how famous chess matches unfolded. A trial version is available for those who want to give it a test run.
Nabisco World Chess
-
One of the few free animated chess games online is "Nabisco World Chess." It's a basic simulator featuring full-movement pieces. It is somewhat dated by 2011 standards with graphics being less than impressive and slow animation, but it still is an opportunity to play quick and easy online games without downloading and installing software. Players can join open games, create private matches with a friend, or even practice against the computer.
