Good Effects of School Uniforms

School uniforms also encourge neatness.

Students in private schools, parochial schools and even some public schools have to wear school uniforms every day. While some may think these identical clothes may inhibit a student from expressing himself through fashion, the uniforms do inspire an overall better learning environment. They encourage professionalism, safety, unity and much more.

  1. Reduction of Distractions

    • Students at Rancho Community Christian School in Temecula, California must wear uniforms to school. On picture day the kids get to dress in the clothes of their choice. However, teachers observed that the students acted abnormally restless and disruptive that day, and blamed the clothes. Short skirts, bare midriffs, sagging jeans and graphic T-shirts all distract a person's eye and concentration. When all students dress the same, they are less distracted and can focus better on their teachers and school work. This translates into better academic performance.

    Professionalism

    • Not only do school uniforms help kids look professional, they also help them act more professional and take their school work more seriously. According to Superintendent Michael Rea of Rancho Community Christian School, "the uniform creates this sense that school isn't about going to play." When students put on their uniforms, they know what is expected of them and what their responsibilities are.

    Safety

    • Gangs notoriously identify themselves by wearing certain colors. School uniforms help prevent this type of identification in learning environments and help keep gang activities out of school yards. The uniforms also hinder the formation of cliques, as everyone looks alike and no one can be excluded due to lack of fashion sense or not wearing the most popular designer or trend. This reduces bullying and peer pressure and increases the students' safety while in the classroom.

    Unity

    • School uniforms also breed unity. All the students look alike in their uniforms and present a united face for the institution. Because uniforms don't allow students to judge each other based on the cost or style of their clothes, the students will recognize each other for who they are, not the designer they're wearing. This helps build communication and friendships among students who might not have spoken to each other otherwise.

    Cost

    • With school uniforms, parents no longer have to spend excessive amounts of money on top designer clothes or accessories for their kids. They also don't have to buy as many clothes for their children, as students don't have to debut a new outfit every day of the week. Uniforms only require a few articles of clothing that can be worn more than once.
